Tech Tip Part Description: Ambient Temperature Sensor
Tech Tip Description: Issue 1:
Caliber / PM vehicles built before 4/15/2006 may set the DTC P0071 for ambient temperature sensor performance fault. The DTC maybe set during cold outside temps and parking in a heated garage. The next morning start in the heated garage then driving in cold weather can cause a false fail of the OBD system. There will be a SB in April issued to resolve the issue for PCM reflash. Do not change the sensor. Issue 2:
ALL VEHICLES Displayed temperature will only update when vehicle is moving. On startup, last known temperature is displayed and vehicle may need to be driven for several minutes before it is updated. Before replacing sensor for an inaccurate or slow to update complaint, please perform the following test:
1. Turn ignition key off and allow the vehicle to soak at a known temperature for 10 minutes.
2. Remove the IOD fuse, wait 10 seconds, and reinstall fuse
3. Turn ignition key on and check temperature display. If display has updated to accurate temperature, the sensor is functioning properly and should not be replaced. Explain the behavior to the customer, referring them to the Understanding Your Instrument Panel section of their Owners Manual.
Issue 3
2009 DS ONLY - if the ambient air temperature displayed in the cluster is higher than actual temperature or fault code P0071 - Ambient Temp Sensor Performance is present, use the V.I.P. Inquiry system to verify if Rapid Response Transmittal number 09-010 applies to this vehicle. If RRT 09-010 does not apply to this vehicle, refer to TSB 08-008-09.
Issue 4:

Inquiry system to verify if Rapid Response Transmittal number 09-045 applies to this vehicle. If RRT 09-045 does not apply to this vehicle, follow normal diagnostic procedure.
